it's a tough call - EMG from any other band would be hailed as their masterpiece. for me, nothing against it at all, but for some reason can't rate it higher than (in no order) JFPL, THB or LB.
probably a mix of overplay and, as odd as this sounds, the four excellent singles and the majority of the album tracks just don't "sit" well as an album, yet the album tracks are individually (more often than not) masterpieces. can't really expand on that, hope you know what i am trying to get at?

THB is top for me.
Then (usually) EMG second followed by JFPL, however they chop and change regularly. But in my opinion EMG is a fantastic album - pretty much love it all, a great follow up to THB cos it's really different. Top tracks - NSAF and Small Black Flowers

If I'm feeling tired or a bit crap, Everything Must Go really lifts me.
I can listen to the album from Start to Finish and take joy from every track. I understand why a lot of people felt they went a bit 'soft' once Everything Must Go was released following on from 3 heavier albums, but what a transition it was. Who really knows what album Number 4 would have sounded like had Richey not left? Everything Must Go is my Favourite.

i.e. James & Sean's writing has changed over the years - I can't imagine Facing Page sounding the same if it'd been used 15 years ago. Plus how knows how the lyrics would have changed with Nicky contributing to them? That has an impact on the sound of the album too. |

EMG is my album No. 1 when it comes to the Manics. It's on top of the list of best albums I heard by anyone. It was an school example of 'mass communication', imo.

I love the whole feel of the album from start to finish, and I disagree with the notion that the album is just a bunch of songs artifically stuck together. It is simply an album in which each song is not in the same style, but they all deserve thier place. |

EMG was the first album I brought and is my favourite manics album. It also takes me back to when I was 16 and enjoying college/having a good time and discovering the joys of real music. Also the singles off the album had really good b-sides so it was like having two great albums by the manics, and I saw them live in manchester (first gig) so the whole EMG era manics holds special memories for me.
