Positives:
Loud guitar based songs with solos The return of an image - Lifeblood had drained of image again which was a bad move. I adored that they put some effort into looking like a kick ass band again and toured like one. Negatives: Putting Underdogs on the album was a fiasco, good song for what it was but not an album track. Welcome to the Dead Zone or Love Letter or something should've been there. Wire's lyrics were at times cringworthy. "Oh god I sound like a liberal" was very pompous; his attempt at politics in words again wasn't much of a success; what the hell did "if god persists" mean? Best songs: I'm Just A Patsy Your Love Alone Is Not Enough Worst: Autumn Song Underdogs |

+ It's success has galvanised the band, hopefully meaning the end of 3-year gaps between albums
+ Some of the best solos JDB has done since THB - Its success has made them come up with this "two versions of ourselves" nonsense, which means we may never see an expansion on what they did with TBTGOG and Lifeblood - The singles are awful, awful songs and look likely to be the representative songs of the album on all future tours ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Picking the best songs is really difficult - SATT, Rendition and Patsy are all right up there with TSGD, and Winterlovers isn't far behind. I decided YLAINE is just slightly worse than Indian Summer.

i would really never wish to fight or argue with you. i bought the singles pack for it because, it seemed to me, getting shit like this into the charts seemed rather important to Nicky Wire. it got played once or twice, but never again.
on the upside, you are in the bracket of a select, chosen few for who they play this live for, presumably. lucky you, quite an honour!

I don't really get all the Autumn Song hate either. Its just a harmless catchy tune full of great melodies.
Granted, the lyrics are just dumb fun rather than anything deeper, but fuck it, it is just a bit of lighthearted fun. |

+ Revitalised the band and gave them new vigor
+ Some great musicianship on there - Bit too calculated, didn't feel like the album they wanted to make at the time and it was written just to appeal to people again, making a few of the album tracks a little disposable, but hey it worked so what do I know! - Again, lyrically a bit poor in place ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

'If God persists, persists in saying "yes"/I guess we'll have, we'll have to test ourselves' In other words, if God keeps allowing us to do whatever we like, we'll have to regulate our (i.e. humanity's) own behaviour. In the past we judged our behaviour by what we thought God wanted. But now the belief in God has disappeared, and as he fails to prove his existence by stopping our attrocities, we'll have to be responsible for ourselves. |
