Also, getting so many mighty fine compliments on my very accurate JDB sailor suit in Liverpool last year was good, shame the gig was only 'average'.

Lots of favourites so hard to choose just one. Both Hammersmiths in 2005, Manic Millennium, Margate 98, Wembley 2002, Kentish Town 2007, the 3 Roundhouse gigs 2009 and Hard Rock Cafe are just some though.

All of the Barrowlands gig have been brilliant, the Millennium gig was so special, and I loved King Tuts because it was so small. I've never been to see them and came away thinking it was a bad gig

There are a few for me, dates escape me a little, I saw them twice in Wolverhampton in 1992 and 1993 I think, one was near my birthday, in July, possibly 93. Drunk, excited, loud, reminded me of how shit Bowie had become having seen Tin Machine a year earlier or so. Yokohama in 2002, well around then anyway, the craziness of the Japanese fans, James laughing at a screamed request for revol. Ten years apart, but still a brilliant band. Then Wolves this year with my sons, seeing words mouthed by them that I'd been mouthing, screaming, shouting for twenty years, I like the manics, I love my lads. I enjoyed writing this and look forward to getting back to London to see them (boys and manics) at O2.

I still think Leeds on the PPF tour in 2005 is my favourite Manics gig; nothing has really beaten it since, although there have been other great gigs too.

The angriest show i've seen was MOVE 2003, just because they sped through the set and sounded really fierce. Then there was Barrowlands 2001, which i remember being fucking noisy so always going to be one of my favourites. Since then though, Brixton this year was especially brilliant as was Wolverhampton.

There were a few gigs for me before this, but the Nynex Arena '97 gig was pretty amazing. It really was 'Manic on the Streets of Manchester', from the massive billboard poster to racing around on the tram meeting friends, leaving trails of feathers everywhere, to my mates being interviewed for the video (I hid from the cameras). And the gig wasn't half bad either! I'd dosed myself up on lucozade sweets all day, paranoid I would faint (had to be dragged out from the barrier at Blackpool a few weeks before), so was a bit on the giddy side.... We just yelled our little hearts out to every single song. An almost perfect setlist. Such a wicked day.

Not necessarily the best gig, but probably the most memorable experience for me was when they played Southend Cliffs Pavilion in c. 92(? Blaggers ITA and Credit to the Nation were supporting...)
I was working at the venue at the time and I was one of the duty managers on that night and I was in the hall during the afternoon when they were soundchecking. Just me, the sound man and them, playing Motorcycle Emptiness. It was something quite special in retrospect. Yes, I'm an old git too... |

That was my first manics gig at the Cliffs Pavilion. Small world. Had a great time. My backstage photos are among my most treasured items. Nick looked great in his floral dress and Sean is almost smiling! Good times...

August 30th 1998 at Belfast Ulster Hall always stands out. We were in the Crown pub beforehand watching Liverpool destroy Newcastle United. A bloke spots our Manics t-shirts and asks if we're going to the gig later, we said we were and asked if he was going as well to which he replied "Yeah I work with the band." I then realise that he's Martin Hall. He stop and chats for about 15 minutes and tells us that If You Tolerate This has just gone in at number 1 in the singles chart, the Manics first number 1 single. He says that Nicky got really drunk on Champagne on the bus up from Dublin where they'd played the night before and they were worried he'd be too pissed for tonight's gig. The gig was great too, really great crowd for a Sunday night concert. Managed to hang around a bit after the gig and got Nick and Sean to sign my Welsh flag.
James' solo gig in Newbridge a few years ago was pretty special too, especially as we managed to spot and chat to Martin Hall again about 10 years after our first meeting and he was still a really nice bloke and happy to talk to the fans. Me and my brother bumped into James in Spillers in Cardiff a few days beforehand and didn't realise he was in town for the Newbridge gig. On the day of the concert we went to Newbridge (our parents only live a few miles away from Newbridge) to see if there were any tickets left to buy from the venue. There weren't but we spotted a massive coach pull up and James got off. We tentatively went over and said "hello do you remember us from the other day in Spillers?" kind of stuff and he put us on the guestlist, which was great but meant hanging around in the smallest town in the world for about 8 hours. One of the locals offered to sell us a pub. The venue was so small it was more like a wedding reception than a gig.

I’ve always said Millennium Eve, first time and best, but Cardiff earlier on in the year runs it pretty close. There were so many highlights.
Plus it made up for that shit, playing the hits and running through the motions debacle at Newport last year.
