YLAINE was a bit of a throwback compared to Nixon, but it at least was able to like in a day. And INWJTEOL was YLAINE with strings and knobs on. FDTW was an incredible throwback but still a good listen. I think it's only Faster and Nixon that have made people think "What's the album going to sound like if that's the lead single?" |

Well, yeah it would great if they did that! Of course it would. But this will be their 11th album, and their all in their 40s now. They aren't youngsters trying to change the world anymore, they're three guys who want to have fun and create good albums. They've still got that rage and intensity, but it's just channelled into something more befitting their maturity.

Slightly harsh... The band have been quite prolific of recent. 3 (very different) albums in 5 years isn't lazy..

Nixon - nothing original? Yeah, there's been loads of pop/rock songs about Richard Nixon!

Agree to a certain extent about the latter two, but the first two? Both SWSS and TLORN sounded like nothing the Manics had ever done before, when they both came out. One was a 'Beach Boys song' (although more the feel of it rather than it actually sounding like one) and the other was 80s-electronica influenced. How can you say they weren't original within the context of the Manics back-catalogue?

I don't really get why JFPL is seen as so musically different or creative or radical etc on here. Out of many of their albums it's probably the most straightforward pop-punk-rock thing they could've released. In many ways, SATT and PFAYM have been the most risky/different albums, given that that style of music hasn't been popular since the days of Urban Hymns.
Also, someone mentioned Horses Under Starlight... Sounds like the SIMS soundtrack really doesn't it

it's a bit of a shame that Oliver Stone, after the sterling work they did on Natural Born Killers, didn't elect to get Nine Inch Nails to do the soundtrack for his Nixon film. we would have had some bangin' tunes about him then.

I like the more electronica sounding stuff that the Manics have done in recent years, like Nixon, like There By The Grace of God and if we're going for B-Sides-Fear of Motion.
I do think Journal for Plague Lovers is better than both Send Away the Tigers and Postcards From A Young Man overall though. So I wouldn't mind if they went a bit harder (whatever that can be interpreted as anyway) or electronic.
