I thought James would be more concerned about how much it used to cost to record an album, GT costing £250,000 seems excessive even when not taking into account it was 1990 money. The days of renting out a mansion are long gone though I wish they'd splash out on a producer and mix up their sound a bit.

I'd also think that the Everything Must Go video might have cost a bit. Perhaps it was the alternate Autumn Song video....

The SWSS video is classic "this songs a bit ropey, lets chuck thousands on the video in the hope no one notices" music biz logic of the time.

Can I shock you? I love both the song (It's really amazing insane thing they've done. It doesn't sound anything like what anyone else was doing) and love the satire of the video.
Tourists in the war zone! Probably got added to redacted lists after 9/11. But what a video to redact due to sensitivities!

I don’t actually mind So Why So Sad the song, and I much prefer the original with its weird stylophone solo to the Avalanches remix. But I really dislike the video, especially the way it keeps cutting to the band playing live. There seems no connection between them and the narrative on the beach, unlike in the Tolerate video.

I always wondered if the bands original vision didn’t have them in it at all and the record company insisted on them appearing in order to green light the budget.

Wire’s hair is awful too. And Jimbo in his drinking pomp. Wasn’t this Sean’s Ferrari cap era as well? Awful all round.

That completely passed me by. My claim to fame that I was at the last Manics gig not to have it performed has been smashed!

I'm not sure if this one counts as a full gig later on the Holy Bible Anniversary, but no You Stole the Sun or Tolerate... Admittedly the second 'set' was only four songs long!

I think videos probably cost more in the 90s because it seemed important to have an expensive video and probably they were more difficult to make then. I don't think the Manics needed to spend so much, even though they are superb. As well as EMG I think GATS videos could also be included in what James was saying though they're not an obvious story and also the KYE videos including Ocean Spray, SWSS, FTS, I think are actually brilliant from the time.

I'm sure there was a story about how the Charlatans were given a budget of tens of thousands of pounds (if not more) to shoot a video so they spent the budget flying their friends and family out to New York, partied for a few days before shooting a ropey video with the last few thousand. Which their record company absolutely loved.

Found That Soul and Ocean Spray both have great videos that must have cost a fraction of the money spent on So Why So Sad. Sometimes less is more.

I always liked the song and video for So Why So Sad, it makes a point of how people are not seeing a war on the beach etc and implication to Know Your Enemy. It probably did cost more to make and some of the lyrics are indicative of religion and affluence, though generally I like the video with this song. I also like the studio and how they look sad and true.

Song titles we know group huddle!
Decline & Fall, Hiding In Plain Sight, Dear Stephen, My Brave Friend, Deleted Scenes, Being Baptised, ONEMANMILITA and Brush Strokes of Reunion. 8 titles. Oh! Critical Thinking!
Ok, nine titles. Now the hard part of guessing which Manic wrote what. My sources are that Mojo interview. The Music Week thing on the other page. Plus what else has been deciphered from the back cover that some have saw. And I've already forgotten the two tracks on the vinyl single

James: Being Baptised, Brush Strokes of Reunion
Nicky: Critical Thinking, Hiding In Plain Sight

So we just need the other three and what the James and Nicky wrote separately are.
I've put on a checkered shirt. Wearing braces and made myself a hot cup to stare blankly at the noticeboard. While internally remembering the days when ITV at least bothered with a car chase and stunt instead of these police procedural things which is all they can afford to do these days. We look great on film however. That compensates for not being able to afford a decent theme tune and flashy title sequence.
Can anyone add to the jigsaw? I'm appealing for witnesses. And that's the only appeal I have these days. And will someone answer that sodding phone the microphone keeps picking up?!

EDIT: I'm not going to grow a moustache.

Don't know if it's been mentioned (apologies if so) but the Amazon CD release has now updated a 3rd track to it's listing "People Ruin Paintings"

10 titles! And what a Manics title!
EDIT: Couldn't see for looking! It's not people ruining paintings by being in them. It could be Just Stop Oil reference?
