Whenever I think the Manics are slipping I thank God that at least they're not Travis or Cast.... but secretly I fear that one day they might be !!!!!

The band, sadly, aren't a singles band anymore. OK, they can release a strong song from an album but in this day and age they're not going to chart well nor sell well over a long period of time. Most bands I like don't get good charting singles anymore and most seem to only release them as a download, so I just buy the album on CD.
Anyway, I like SKON a lot. It's a beautiful song and I personally like it on all levels but releasing it in the Xmas run in was a bad move. Either way, this brings an end to the Postcards era I reckon.

Every Liverpool studio has a few equipment cases with CAST on it.
The last time I was at Highfield St. Studios they had a Manics one. IT COULD HAPPEN. They could become a running box joke.

Personally, I think the Manics could do with a bit of a change in record company...might actually do them some good creatively if they don't feel pressured into producing tunes they think will appeal to a wider audience. Won't happen though because I believe they signed a long-term deal with Sony (the only way out would be if Sony were to buy them out of their contract which isn't likely given they still sell records in the UK).
As long as they're with a major like Sony, the typical Manics trend of one shit, throw away album followed by one that's far more visceral and creative, will continue. I don't think PFAYM is a poor album - there's some real gems on that album - it's just not great in the same way that KYE wasn't great, but did have a few really top tunes. Unlike most of you, I couldnt care less how their singles fair; it's the quality of an album in it's entirety that makes a band/musician stand out for me especially when an artist has reached a stage in their career when they should be focusing on music that makes sense to them and not worrying about how many units they sell. If it's good, which we all know from previous endeavors by the band that they are more then capable of producing quality music, people will be drawn in as they have been in the past. |
