Although I think even if a lot of people heard the truth they wouldn't believe it. Not my place to talk, all I say is question everything...

I shall await the usual barrage of irony/insults that you close knit lot bestow on anybody with an alternative point of view! *Puts up umbrella/cunt shield*
It must be awful lonely under that bridge with your cunt shield.

Born on the 5th November - It's mentioned in Everything... Got a similar-ish sentiment to Vincent I think

No Jesus gif, but this thread's been pretty:

I'm a nothing on this board, so I'm not arsed about being unpopular, SO I agree with some of the things SHR has said re Richey's relationship with the band towards the end of his involvement with the band.

If SHR is talking some weird Ickean conspiracy shit about the Illuminati and the 27 club though, fuck it.

no one cares what SHR thinks. He/she is entitled to an opinion as are you. Baiting the forum isn't really working tho' is it? It's not 2003 anymore and everything is one massive joke

Loving this track, yes it's on the nose but so what? It's a great intro that on another album could have taken it in a much darker direction but instead it kicks you in the arse and you land in a glorious synth-filled 80's! Listening to this may have been the only thing that actually made my gym session a possibility this morning!
Chorus is perpetually stuck in my brain now and I really enjoyed the other three new tracks when we had them live too, especially LGTW & Europa - Futurology can't come soon enough judging by the evidence so far!

Oh, hello to you all by the way!

In terms of lyrics, is anyone else feeling a Van Gogh/Don McLean reference in the first verse?
"We smile at this ugly world / It never really suited you" - as in 'Vincent' "This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you".

And you know, the whole tortured artist thing... need I say more.

Not sure if anyone else has said anything about it (first post nerves) but do you think the curled animal line has anything to do with DITS maybe? Reminded me of it anyway

My thoughts on the song. Musically it's fantastic, James sounds so good, the initial false chorus and interchanging lyrics keep it interesting. Some nice atmospheric guitar work too. And the synths and bass are *monstrous* (this is a good thing)

Lyrically it's very strong, I think some are taking the meaning of the words too literally. This is a forward looking song. No closure but a sense of acceptance of what's happened.

The song begins with the desperate image of the left behind retracing the final steps of their friend. He admits that he cannot understand what happened, or why, and how much it hurt "So long my fatal friend, I don't need this.." Rationalising and then mourning.

But this then changes to "So long my faithful friend, I don't need this to end", that is, remembering his friend whom he loved and admired so much. He is asking his "faithful" friend to accompany him to this place, on the other side. 'Walk Me To the Bridge' I think means, help me to move on. I guess it's rhetorical, in motion, ongoing, because the dialogue is internal.

He writes how the phrase "take it to the bridge" had another meaning (before the tragedy) and how they used to sing it "loud at the indie disco." This is pure joyous nostalgia, reclaiming a positive from a negative. The lyrics are at times blunt, then suddenly allegorical, like the music they are pulsating.

I lost a good friend last year and I feel a strong affinity with the sense of this song and the above is what I've taken from it. Thank you MSP.

9/10

Every forum is the same, whatever the subject matter. Fans bickered in 1993, 2003, 2013...they always will. It adds some spice, at least (and some new members).

I'm not sure! I'll just blame James's enunciation :-)

By the way, I hear FATAL friend. Faithful friend sounds too much like he's singing about a pet dog.

Pretty sure I hear both 'fatal' and 'faithful' used at different points in the song.
