They sound better live than they did in 2001, but on record they were better in 2001 and they were playing better setlists back then as well (cos of KYE songs).

Meh. I only want to hear James is not an objective viewpoint on whether they sound better or not, like their setlists being bad isn't.

Yes, it is, James's guitar playing is unique, everytime I hear their nowadays No Surface All Feeling rendition I'm terrified by Murray's guitar. It sounds horrible. James produces great sound and it is a sound of Manic Street Preachers. And of course setlist is important. Bad songs never sound good. But I didn't write it to contribute to "sound quarrel" I just wanted to say that they were better live a decade ago.

What have either of these two points got to do with the Manics playing gigs with backing musicians?

Nothing. I was talking about Manics' gigs (and about their being better/worse than earlier)

Opinion 1!
No, Opinion 2! Ah, But Opinion 1! I think you'll find that proves what I said is true. No, Opinion 2! And Opinion 3 that is compatible with Opinion 2! I win!

![]() I guess You're laughing at me (altough I'm not 100% sure ![]() ![]() But I write it all once more again (and I hope for the last time, anyway I think I'm the only one who doesn't appreciate what Manics have become to so it's pointless... ![]() I was answering the post that states that Manics sound better now than in 2001. For many reasons ( ![]() And I think that: 1. The backing musicians ruin the gigs (not always, not the whole gig, but very much) except Naysmith, he was fine (not always, but the things Manics let him do were OK, secong guitar is not OK for me, nor is Reed because of his vocals, tambourine and cowbell) 2. The sound of MSP is mainly James's voice and guitar. a)Since there's been second guitarist it's not that great as it was when he played alone, his guitar sound was magnificent experience for me in 2002, compared to this only first half of JPFL gigs in Roundhouse was any good. I don't say they are not worth listening now, I just want to explain that (at least for me) something has dissapeared. b)James voice is worse and worse. It's still great, but I'm afraid I'm right. Neither the studio work is not as good as it was (JFPL is great but only good/average compared to golden 93-94). But I must say that he was terrific at the first Roundhouse gig last year. He should stop smoking, that's for sure. 3.Setlists. I mentioned them because I wasn't really answering the exact quote as I explained in the first post. But the only thing I've really appreciated lately was entire JFPL. Their setlists are sterile. And the sentence I replied later meant that only a good setlist let the band sound great. I don't know how to explain it properly but I believe it. ![]() Sorry for my horrible english. (It took so much time to write this...) Love Donkey

You only have to listen to Judge Yrself live to see why they needed an extra guitarist. The songs weren't written to be played by just 3 people.

I think the band's live sound took a massive dip after the LB era, perhaps it could have been due to the sound crew being alledgedly fired during the tour? From SATT on, their live sound has been very poor. It seems to have coincided with Wayne Murray coming in, as they still sounded good with Guy Massey. I preferred it when it was just James on guitar, the sound was so much clearer, due to the fact there was only one guitar. You can't place much blame on the band members though, they don't do their live sound - take it up with the blokes behind the desk.

I think the bloke on the mixing desk was fired after he knocked his drink onto the mixing desk at Notts.

I imagine it's in the original thread about the gig. I'm not sure if it's true he was fired, just what I've been told. There were definitely big problems, and the band had to go off for a bit.
