I think I'd probably just want to die at that point. On the sidewalk, like a splotch...

I was away for the weekend and wasn’t surprised by the overreacting and overdebating when I saw the chart position. The Wire has got his just deserts now, so hopefully his ego has taken a dent and they’ll re-evaluate the stupidity of this “two sides to the band” thing.

Might mention that to James as well. 'Waddaya mean there's only two sides to the band!?!'

In reality there’s only really one side to the band, they’ve never altered their playing style. Even on their “different” sounding albums it’s still Manics + strings (TIMTTMY), Manics + keyboards (LB) or Manics + choirs (PFAYM). Underneath the additional instruments is still the same band. So next time round, stop farting about with different instruments/elements and get back in a room as a three piece.

Although they work really well with a Gospel choir. If they learn anything from this year, I'd rather it was that.

The reaction here at least was pretty good when we first heard SKON, the chart position doesn't change that even if a few people don't like it.

have the manics overcome the first week position? Do you believe that Skon charts better than #44?

SKON will probably sell about 1 (yes one) copy this week. It's had it's time in the spotlight....well, not really.

I can see them either splitting up now or doing a 'no more albums' Radiohead/Pumpkins-style thing. Certainly once they get bored half way to the 75 they want for the next one.

I'd say that's a fairly unlikely scenario - they're too in love with making music together to split up, they seem to hold weight to the concept of albums as cohesive units based on their remarks about other people's music and "no more albums" thingy would be a bit too 'liberal' for them anyway, and they've said that "last shot at mass communication" wouldn't mean quitting music if the shot missed anyway.

A more likely scenario is that they'll now focus on writing and recording music as usual but stop trying to make it a HUGE COMMERCIAL DEAL. Crank out a single or two from albums, release it and enjoy the steady sales and attention from the fanbase. Being a doomsayer is silly at the moment and I don't want to be one anyway, but if this were to be a case that their last shot was a very fleeting one and the marketing campaign will fade into obscurity after this, I do kinda hope that they take a step back from trying to set the charts on fire and just focus on doing things at peace and for whatever reason rather than try to hit a certain goal. I mean I think PFAYM is rather good and all but I do kinda prefer the band when they aren't thinking about the reception of the material. Hell, maybe James'll even start writing songs longer than three and a half minutes if he didn't have to worry about radio edits.

But of course, I do wish them commercial success because I'm not a sod.

I truly hope you're right and I'm wrong. I worry about Nicky mostly though, he's never embraced the passion of playing bass for the mere pleasure of it; if he thinks no one's listening he might become the Welsh hermit, RS Thomas style.

But he'll always keep on writing, and that's enough for the band to go on.
