Me too...
'Misfire' is not a harsh enough word to describe PFAYM. |

I don't think PFAYM is a bad album at all...but it was an album no-one (well, most people) really wanted. In the world of LMFAO and Calvin Harris where Snow Patrol are deemed alternative, the masses weren't that interested in new 'Classic Manics' and most fans seemed to want something darker along JFPL lines. More to the point, the band hadn't sounded as comfortable in their own skin for years with Journal and their standing in the music world hadn't been as high since the EMG days. PFAYM was doomed from the word go and genuinely the band's first misfire. Lifeblood was a magnificent piece of work but unsurprisingly, divided opinion and SATT was necessary to claw back lost ground...but after JFPL they had nothing to claw back. |

So far it looks like Journal was the last good shot of nearly dead western hero.
Only THB is better album than Journal. Journal is the best album of 01-10 decade. If you want to make their discography ideal, just delete Truth, KYE, SATT and PFAYM.

I wonder if PFAYM will ever experience a change of opinions about it in the future. I genuinely like it.

I can negotiate with the others, but leave KYE alone! Bit too much filler, maybe, but it has some really brilliant songs. |

Tell you what though, Intravinous Agnostic, Found That Soul, The Convalesant and Freedom of Speech won't Feed my Children were great songs, as was the artwork for the record. There was some serious crap there too though. Could have been shorter

Nicky said a lot was one or two lines and a lot was disjointed but it would have been interesting to see the folder as it was left unedited. Although there are aparantly some very macabre lines in there. Overall people say JFPL has an air of acceptance about it where James (I think it was) said something along the lines that compared to the bible Journal is the work of someone who has stopped asking questions and decided what the answers are and where he is. Its debatable how much of that is due to wire's editing process on certain tracks and how much is Richey's mindset at the time? |

I disagree - those albums are, while not flawless, still 100x better than most bands output. Even the most mundane manics track is better than most other bands output in the relevent time periods.

![]() but those albums previously mentioned - Truth, KYE, SATT and PFAYM Truth 1998 KYR 2001 SATT 2007 PFAYM 2010 If we take the brit awards just as a starting point, 1998 - 1999 - manics won best album with truth While can can discuss the merits of that album in isolation, it is undoutably a much better album than those other albums nominated: Catatonia — International Velvet, Gomez — Bring It On, Massive Attack — Mezzanine, Robbie Williams — I've Been Expecting You So compare the album to the rubish out around the same time and it stands head and shoulders above. 2001 - 2002 - manics ignored with KYE Yet you look at the winner Dido — No Angel which is as bland, boring and nondescript as they come(apologies to any Dido fans). Others nominated were Craig David — Born to Do It (where is he now?), Gorillaz — Gorillaz (never saw the attraction to them myself), Radiohead — Kid A (not OK computer, but then again not much is, but still a good album in its own right), Travis — The Invisible Band (has an album title ever been more apt - invisible, boring, and they have now disapeared! lol). Excluding KID A none of the others can even be compared to KYE 2007 - 2008 - SATT AGAIN IGNORED! Winner was Arctic Monkeys — Favourite Worst Nightmare...again another band I have never saw the attraction of, other bands have done what they do before better - why go for a second rate rip off? The others nominated, Leona Lewis — Spirit, Mark Ronson — Version, Mika — Life in Cartoon Motion, Take That — Beautiful World do nothing for me and the relevent albums cannot be compared to the sometimes formulaic, other times majestic SATT. 2011 - im not going to over analyse it but I think the fact Mumford & Sons — Sigh No More, Plan B — The Defamation of Strickland Banks, Take That — Progress, Tinie Tempah — Disc-Overy, The xx — xx were nominated for best albums show that, in the climate it came out in, PFAYM might not be the best album by the manics own standards but it far superior to other albums which came out around the same time! Obviously this is only a brief example as it only takes its source from one place (brit awards) but I think it nicley illustrates the point im trying to make. The maincs have set their own high standards which they will not always be able to hit/maintain, but their output is still favours highley compared to other bands/artists output. |
