Well, personally I like the album, but according to some music critiques, if I remember correctly, it is their least groovey and least socially engaged, but rather personal enganged, album. Some might simply say they went "too pop" with this one? It might as well sound boring to someone else who's affectioned to James' guitar, since there it isn't so pointed out.
I mean, I really do not dislike the album, I love listening to it time to time and I used to be quite addicted when it fisrt came out too. But, you know, trying to think of a different perspective, this is what I'd got.

^ I understood. For me that transition was smooth and I liked the change. Maybe because my life was easy and happy back in the day so the fact that LB sounded "too pop" didn't bother me at all. Lol I sound biased now ...

For me it is simply the fact that it's different. Well, the Manics albums all differ from each other, but this one is the most different. I see it as an experimental work from that point of view and I welcome any experimentation by the artist.
Also, back then it was a new album after a pretty long time, you know, and voices they'd end this time for sure, and the time when they tried solo carreers.... I was quite excited.
