well, even though it was not a full Manics blown thing, just remixes, it is a physical vinyl and therefore will be selling online soon for something like £25+....

...in a couple of years may be in the great black book of Rare Record Price Guide.

The market decides what's collectable, not the manufacturers

So true. This may or may not be a big deal in a year's time.

Which is largely conjecture as UEF stated. Something's only worth what others will pay for it.

I really don't see the value of this, it doesn't add anything whatsoever - not even something nice to look at! I must be getting jaded, but my gut reaction is that it's taking fans for mugs - unless it's specifically aimed at vinyl junkies who don't have access to the MP3s.

In which case it should have come out at the same time, with the same title/cover, as an MP3 and vinyl only release.

Obviously I'm not dissing anyone on here who wants to buy it, I just don't get it. Maybe I'm bitter 'cause I bought the original remixes EP on iTunes, and then the album came out, so I already feel like these remixes have had one over on me once.

Oh, and they're mostly sht.

I think it's a nice collectable, and I think one could argue that remixes are especially suited to a vinyl release given the popularity of that format with people who would go for remixes (generally speaking). [Edit: just seen Cam make the same point in less words with added sarcasm: I lose!]

Of course there is the age-old argument of analogue Vs digital formats too, although we don't know what the source is for the vinyl, so if it was just the MP3s used as the source material it'd be a little silly from that point of view, but I doubt many copies will be sold on the basis of audiophile tendancies.

But really, people buy badges and stickers and posters, and they are not much more useful. It's a collectable, that's all it needs to be.

That's about the only fair argument for the record in this thread, fair play.

Don't a lot of DJs do stuff electronicaly now? I have to say I honestly know nothing about how they do their stuff.

As if 99% of the people who buy this are buying it for that reason.

I agree that it's exploiting the fans a bit, but no more than selling those awful remixes on iTunes was. And some people are happy to be exploited.

Well exactly. No one is forced to buy this, or any of the other questionable releases the band have ever put out there. Are most of them really needed? If you don't think the product is worth it, don't buy it.

Well, if there's any Underworld fans out there who know of the existence of this...

Yeah - there is that factor that some people absolutely have to have everything. Some call it completism, but its almost as if they harbour a secret, subconscious idea that one day the band will call them up like St Paul at the pearly gates and go "Thank you, your loyalty has been rewarded" and allow them into MSP heaven.

In reality it's just a record company keeping one of its brands ticking over and a little bit of a gift to those that want it.

Yeah, a lot of them do. There's definitely still a market for vinyl though. I'd bet that's where most of the other 100 records went...

Releasing 200-300 records is hardly what I'd call "exploiting" fans though. The band can't possibly expect to make much money off this, especially if royalties have to be paid to all those involved with the remixes (although that I know little about, so correct if I'm wrong!) And I think it's understandable that people might simply want to own it in a tangible format instead of mp3s. So even if ultimately it is a collector's item, I think there are entirely valid reasons people would want to buy it.

It really should've come out at the same time as the remix EP in the first place though.
