For me it was the oddest inclusion on the setlist. But I concede that's because it's one of my least favourite songs from my least favourite Manics album.

I've just got round to watching the BBC footage; regardless of what others have said, I enjoyed it! Of course it's not comparable to actually being there, but it looked and sounded fantastic (the sound and editing seemed better in the first half for THB songs for some reason...probably because they joined it live for the second half and the camera work was a bit shaky in the second half too).
From the overhead shots people seemed to be enjoying it, singing along for the bigger songs and applauding in the right places. Obviously that was only a snapshot and I was at the front, so it was probably a lot more lively than the back. But then if you go towards the back of most gigs, you'll find people tend to just stand there rather than jump/sing along (especially if they're listening to THB of all albums - not exactly a party album, as James himself pointed out). I suppose that's the best you're going to get at a gig this size. I spotted myself, James/MSPKYE and lots of other familiar faces throughout in the crowd shots. I got a close-up during The Everlasting, argh cringe! I got a bit emotional watching ADFL back. Visually it looked impressive within the grounds of the castle and the fireworks going off; a very triumphant ending. I'm also so glad they captured the bass trashing on camera as well. Watching it back was even more hilarious than last night for some reason; it really seemed to go on forever and James pretty much hit himself in the face when he did finally break it To see the Manics play their own gig and not a festival to that many people is really bloody impressive for this stage of their career. It definitely wasn't 'embarrassing' and I don't see why they should stop. They celebrate nostalgia and the past as much as the future; this is not a new thing for them. But they have given us two new strong albums in the last couple of years, so I don't really get the big deal if they want to celebrate older material like this too. This gig was a great way to round off the UK tour; no it wasn't the best THB gig in terms of performance for me (the December gigs had a real edginess that these ones this last week didn't have and I preferred the venue choices from last year too), but for sense of occasion, this was bang on. I was expecting something that hadn't been in the setlist in the gigs leading up to Cardiff and Golden Platitudes was very much in the shows before so not really a rarity esp as they'd played it on Postcards tour alot.

True, true. It is 'rare' only in the sense of not being a single or a particularly well-loved track though, I suppose.

Anyways. Beautiful track and glad they kept it in the set. As in 'rarities' i was hoping for some Holy Bible B-Sides or the like.

The gigs last year were much more intense but they had to be. They knew they'd be up for a shitload of criticism if they didnt nail it. Manchester at the Albert Hall was such a perfect venue for THB and while i almost melted in the heat it was brilliant. I don't blame them for wanting to take a more relaxed approach this time

This gig did sell out in less than a day as I was hoping to buy tickets when I got home from Manchester and they sold out. It was nice TV viewing for an evening I would have been more upset if they had shown Sex, Power and so on because its such a dumb punk song to jump about silly to. Their last album I still believe is one of their best since the turn of the decade probably only beaten by JFPL. I don't expect another EMG or THB now from them to expect that would be fanciable, Springsteen has a hell of a lot of filler in recent years but I still listen as you'll get 4 or 5 songs that you love. And then there are those who haven't seen the Manics 20 or so times, I see Fleetwood Mac next week for the first time (and probably the last) if they turned out and played all the songs from "Time" I would be ok with it but would question where the Rumours and Tusk stuff was. I've been a fan for now nearly 18 years, when Nicky Wire says they will play something don't believe it. Actually the surprises have come when he makes no prior announcement.

Just had a chance to see the bbc stuff - what a treat! I can't remember the last time I listened to tolerate on record but sounded absolutely immense on the box.
