Watching the vid for it from the 02 right now!
![]() Radiomanic likes So Why So Sad so in theory he shouldn't have a dislike for Autumnsong. I shall have to keep working on him until he cracks! ![]()

So Why So Sad was an experiment in pop music, Autumnsong is just one of the shittest songs a guitar band has ever written. There is no argument.

I don't mind it and in a right mood I can enjoy it, but it is overloaded with cheese and corniness and it does come off as a bit of a novelty song. Which doesn't really suit the band (Ghost of Christmas excluded), especially when there's the constant feeling that they might actually be earnest with the song. It's not a highlight of any sort by any means, but it's not the worst track on SATT (Rendition) or even the worst single from that era (YLAINE).
I can see why people dislike it but the hate is a bit bizarrely massive at times.

Really enjoyed reading through this thread. This is my view on the gig:
HIGHLIGHTS: - James's voice sounding feckin' incredible. - James being a guitar god, soloing and riffing like a muthabitch! - The girl next to me shouting to Nicky that he should be in a dress and his response "I'd rather be in a dress to be honest with you. What about you James?" - Nicky's shambolic on stage costume change. - James: You may be getting laid but I'M in the top ten" - The stage set up and the screens. - 'Motorcycle Emptiness'. As urgent as i've ever heard it - Gryff adding something special to 'Let Robeson Sing' - 'Faster'. Hardcore. Just hardcore. - 'This Is The Day' making me a bit emotional - "WHY DON'Y YOU JUST FUCK OFF?!" - 'Found That Soul' Haven't seen it live for a decade. Worth the wait! - 'There By The Grace Of God'. Brill song done justice finally. - 'REVOL!!!!!' Mental and loud as fuck - 'The Love Of Richard Nixon' Again, brill song finally done justice. - 'Masses Against The Classes' GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! - Going apeshit for a very aggresive 'Motown Junk' - 'A Design For Life'. Full blooded rendition with added confetti. - Nicky: "In typical fashion, i put my shoulder out during Revol". LOWLIGHTS: - Getting to the venue half an hour before stage time and there still being a cue of a few thousand people. Got in late (got on the wrong tube train!!!) but thankfully the band delayed the start and i easily got down the front. - 'Some Kind Of Nothingness'. They can never quite get this one right - 'So Why So Sad' Introduced with an apology and delivered with all the conviction of one too. - Nina's voice being way to easily outpowered by the volume of the band. - James: "See you in two years time... hopefully". GULP In short. It was awesome :-)

To be honest, there's just no excuse for any reasonably successful band playing in a reasonably sized venue not being able to record the gig and make it available to fans straight afterwards. The Manics playing a massive one-off event at the O2? Recording it and selling it would have been a piece of piss. They could have had a stall set up outside and been selling copies before half of us had even gotten out of the main arena, and made another few grand in a few minutes. At the very least, they could be selling it online right now. But then, what can you expect from a band who can't even put out a decent box set? ![]()

Its very common practice among a lot of rock bands to have sounddesk cds available, usually as a usb stick, and you download it when you get home.Great idea and easy to do.And a better memory of the gig than an overpriced t.shirt. The gig itself was excellent though. My highlights were The everlasting and Motorcycle emptiness. And the stage set up looked fantastic from about half way back.

I won't try and write all my highlights with one finger on my phone, but one thing I would say is that the reaction from the crowd, where I was at least, to Autumnsong was really good. When James announced it people cheered. It made me think that yes it's cheesy, and has stupid lyrics, but maybe it reinforced the 'comeback' in 2007 that Your Love Alone started.
Personally I like it because it is different to their other output. But I do wish Tigers or Patsy had been the 3rd single.

OK, Autumnsong has grown on me, as a live song. I still think Indian Summer is their dullest single from their dullest album though. As they did it, I was thinking 'Why not Send Away The Tigers or Imperial Bodybags'?

Does it really need explaining for the umpteenth time why Autumnsong is an abomination from a band that has the nerve to slag off Coldplay and Snow Patrol for being boring and the current generation for having nothing to say?
You can like it, just like people can like Daniel O'Donnell, but it has been scientifically proven to be shit and all you holocaust deniers need to come to terms with that. |
