Still enjoying the show, have it on as background when playing a game that isn't story driven or out for walks. I see a second podcast has popped onto the scene, I didn't think there would be that much interest!

Thank you! Just had a listen! It's a completely different format to the DTLU podcast which is good. I was hoping they might mention it. I like the hosts and as someone who knows no other Manics fans, it's always a pleasure to hear others talk enthusiastically about MSP.

Such a reactionary band!
It's been said before that the next album is usually a reaction to the preceding one and this is a perfect example of them turning inward. All change again for know your enemy. There was discussion towards the start about their popularity in wales and how much they are respected here but i'd probably refute that. The band have said in the past they don't even sell that much in wales and from personal experience i wouldn't say they are the preferred welsh act over super furry animals or, god forbid, the stereobloodyphonics. I'm paraphrasing here but the nicky quote about patagonia is something along the lines of the irish emigrating to america and becoming folk heroes while the welsh emigrated to patagonia and died out - "i'd go to patagonia but it's harder there". Cofiwch dryweryn is definitely a thing over here, i took a photo of some graffiti on the side of a building in bridgend last august that someone had spray painted. Fun episode though with a knowledgeable guest to bring a different perspective.

There’s a perception by people outside of the U.K. (or Wales) that MSP must be massive here. They’re not! I’ve never met anyone who knows the band past the big 2/3 songs.

She threw a couple of curve ball tracks in there, didn't she? I think i've recovered now from james singing a lyric like wake up alone but i do like their cover of it and it's a brave move for a rock band to go for it. Although it's a bit alarming when you hear him sing a line like 'when he comes to me i drip for him tonight'.
![]() Why they are (or were) a band that creates such obsession is a good question and something i've thought about myself. I've spoken to people who have obsessed over other bands but it's rarely to the same level of devotion and answering why leads you down all sorts of paths but it's probably a combination of music, literary references, politics and identifying with a group of people who embrace and celebrate their outsiderness. If that's a word. I'd say the band enjoy their nerdiness and did so back before nerds ruled the world. Difficult to answer though but i'm glad your conversation brought it up.
