The quality of their output has steadily declined over the years, with JFPL being just slightly better than anything else post EMG.

So a record of 70 songs from a flagging band would be absolute, mind numbing, skull crushing torture. The amount of filler would be incredible.

I think it would be great actually, bound to be some shit when there's that many songs (by "shit" I mean "songs where Nicky sings", hehe!), but I think it would give them the freedom to explore avenues they don't normally dare, because they're too worried about being commercial, which is the version of the Manics I least like. But still like obviously.

if they thrashed out 70 one-minute mental numbers and released it that would be quite class.

if they have been lurking on here and have compiled a list of the 70 posters they consider to be the biggest cunts and the songs are all one minute tirades inspired by the log on names, well, so much the better.

oh come on, JFPL was a masterpiece, they still have the ability to do anything they put their mind to, of course there'd be some duff tracks but if we got 50 genunely good songs then I wouldn't complain one bit.

I just don't think that they have the stamina in them write any more than an albums worth of good songs. In fact, I know they don't because they've been shockingly inconsistent for many years now. I suppose, objectively speaking, JFPL has better songs on it than the norm and probably makes it their best post-EMG album, even if I didn't quite "get it". But the Manics, as much as I love them, are a band who have written two consistently good records out of ten.

70 songs would be painful.

I dunno, they release a plethora of b-sides with every album, some of which are often better than the album tracks, I'd happily wait 3-4 years for them to do it but I think it could be done, 70 would only be a small fragment of the amount of songs they've produced in the past.

I can see why people are anxious (although this isn't necessarily the next album plan anyway) but the band wouldn't do it if they thought the songs would just be filler.

There's a certain amount of self inflicted pressure though. If the band say "we're doing 70 songs" then the quality control goes out the window in order to fulfil that promise. No one can write 70 good songs for the one record. Some of the greatest artists in the world would be incapable of such a feat.

I can't really see them doing 70 songs for an album, but I would say it's a point in the direction they'll be going.
I can see them doing something different as after 10 albums they may be a little dry on ideas for album number 11.
I'd definitely entertain a double album of 25 songs with a radical change in music direction.
I'd LOVE to see the manics return to their Guns N Roses, Generation Terrorists and Gold Against The Soul roots and not a word uttered about The Holy Bible or Everything Must Go in the process of making the album.

That was my first thought too! Even the drummer sings a song on that album. Maybe Sean could cover When Ivan Meets GI Joe for it?

I think Nicky would genuinely love some of them, and have a good giggle at them all.

Can you imagine a tour in support of this album, where they perform the whole thing in its entirety? LOL. If you said, on average, that each song would be 3 1/2 minutes... you'd be looking at over a 4 hour show, not taking into account breaks, etc. Plus then the obligatory "greatest hits" set afterwards. LOL.

As for the album, there would have to be a deluxe edition with 70 demos as well... 140 tracks total, maybe 8 discs?
