'Twas quite long but still enjoyable.
Lucas is definitely special though, isn't he? Maroon 5 and the thunderbirds? Nobody loved you being a "nothing" song? Okayyy... *side-eye* But we love him all the same and value his input. I think the word you were all struggling for for the first half of this is melancholy. This album is melancholia eternally. I'm always amazed how much non-fans enjoy you stole the sun because fans have always seemed lukewarm on it, i certainly am, i'd never put it in my top 10 or even top 20. It's no wonder they drag it out for festivals, seems to go down a treat for the masses. Still a great gig to watch but my heart breaks a little that neither steve nor lucas knew who arthur scargill is.
Poor james though. I remember feeling so terrible for him when his guitar strap broke in front of a global audience. That's the thing about the manics, they have a bit of that 'snatching defeat from the jaws of victory' throughout their career. But i think they're well aware of it, i don't feel they've often been arrogant with their success. Respect to them for keeping the cost down for their gigs over the years when most of the ticket price goes to the scammers otherwise known as ticket companies. It's sweet that both steve and lucas are kinda looking forward to the december gig on the basis of this but i hope you're managing their expectations somewhat. As you pointed out james just can't sing like that anymore, his range is shot to pieces, and you're not going to see many dressing up but i still say go for it! Any idles fan on here then? I'm not but then i don't know much about them so i wasn't aware of any comparison between them and the manics. From what i've listened to and read so far i can only really see this in a very superficial way - socialism good and tories bad mmmkay? I'm sure there's more i'm missing but to me they share a lot more with sleaford mods but s'all good, man.

Really loved this weeks' podcast going through all of KYE track-by-track, definitely up there as one of my fave eps of this podcast so far. Was very interesting hearing the varying opinions, and whilst not overdone at all the Ocean Spray story/connection was actually pretty moving and very on-point in terms of how personal feelings and meanings can attach themselves to art and give it a personal context that no-one can (or at least in my view should) ever take away from you, regardless of more general opinions.

 I agree with that, specifically the bit about emotional context for why a song hits you. I've always liked ocean spray but i could never hate it because of what it means to james having written it, it adds poignancy to the song and elevates it.There's so much i just love on know your enemy despite it being overly long and all over the place - no coherency. Intravenous agnostic still has the power to hit me right there, i even used part of it in a uni project. With some cracking b-sides as well - locust valley, masking tape, just a kid, didn't my lord deliver daniel, fear of motion... I'm gonna add a couple of corrections/omissions (at least what i think) - pretty sure year of purification is a nod to the foot and mouth outbreak that occurred early that year. For some reason i have that in the back of my mind, maybe they talked about it in an interview. Miss europa - i don't think this was meant to be an attack on 70s disco at all, i thought it was more of a scathing look at UK club culture, particularly abroad where you have pissed-up brits descending on ibiza and "having it large". Listening to these pods though, and it's more apparent on this one and holy bible, it makes me appreciate the manics for making me aware of quite a diverse range of subjects from at least a starting point. Saying that, how can you not know of mccarthyism and the spanish civil war? That really surprises me, maybe moreso than not knowing who arthur scargill is. Really enjoyed the KYE episode. It made me recall how much I listened to the album when it came out, but not much since they released newer material. Those songs take me right back to the summer between leaving school and starting college. The gap between KYE in 2001 and Lifeblood in 2004 seemed so long back then (I was 16).
Miss Europa was one of my favourites when it first came out. Always remember buying Let Robeson Sing on my first day at college, the day before 9/11. Now I'd say my favourite was probably between "Intravenous Agnostic", "Let Robeson Sing" and "Dead Martyrs". These days it's easier to appreciate the album for what it is, rather than compare it TIMTTMY. Since this latest podcast episode I must have listened to KYE about 5 times in its entirety. Loving it!

Anyway... some of the manic's best stuff is found in the b-sides but i agree a lot on here is quite conventional and missing better b-side material (IMHO). Like umm... Starlover Soul contamination A vision of dead desire Dead yankee drawl Never want again Hibernation Are mothers saints Too cold here Love torn us under Masking tape Locust valley Blackholes for the young Buildings for dead people Why not put ballad of the bangkok novotel on there if you really want to alienate the casual listener because i think something like this should appeal more to manics fans but the tracklisting doesn't quite achieve it. Am i remembering this right that there was an online vote for the tracklisting on the official site? In my hazy memory too cold here came out on top but they didn't include it because the band hate the song.
