Be lucky to hang on to a top 10 placing then if this is true. It's just not had any promotion so people aren't aware of it much at all. If they had bothered to make a good video it would have been on music channels lots, that's one of the main ways people take note of bands and songs through interesting, eye catching and fun videos.
Still, a top 10 single isn't the end of the world is it, and hopefully it will pick up sales of the album a little, but I don't think it will ever hit the top 40 again.

It's had as much promotion as any stone cold turkey could possibly hope for. I don't know why fans even want it to succeed. The sooner the Manics are made aware that the mainstream isn't interested in songs that sound like a commercial for a pension company from them the better

Very few albums get four singles, looks like it will get a third, maybe some special ep will be out by the time of the tour.
The fact that SATT is a 10 track (mainly) album and that Underdogs is a semi-single makes me think there won't be a fourth, but I could hope. It's just that, apart from Lifeblood they've usually had four singles per album at least, but again the industry is a bit different now.

The EP sounds more likely and I'd prefer one - one to buy in the shops rather than sending off for and not getting it because you were one of the first to send off for it.

Not surprised it's falling through the chart. none of the damn shops have anything left! I still need another 7". I wonder if the muck up at recordstore has effected things too?

The song is not that bad - it is certainly not the best on the album and not as strong as the rather brilliant YLAINE, but a decent choice for a single.

Whats wrong with wanting them to succeed with it - I wouldn't want Sony to pull the plug on another single if it does badly.

I am disappointed that it has not done a bit better though - it has climed to 24 on the itunes rock chart, but is still outside the top 100 overall. All of its rivals for a top 10 slot on Sunday are in the top 30. As I think someone has already pointed out, even James's solo version of YLAINE made the top 100 - I am surprised not to see the same with the AS acoustic.

Go on, download it, or the alternative version everyone - you know you want to

If downloads didn't count towards the charts, I thin pretty much all Manics singles would go in at number two in their first week due to their big fnabase. Now downloads are big business amongst the tinyboppers, it keeps the shit in the charts for longer, making it harder for the Manics to get those higher chart positions. Even 20 years ago songs never hung around as long as some of the stuff does in the charts nowadays.

Even watching T4 on the Beach last week, you could see the Manics went down like a lead balloon so obviously don't appeal massively to that teen market.

Agree with everyone that a really strong video is important as video play would make a difference now Radio1 ignore them.

But you have to ask yourself this: is it really a coincidence that Autumnsong has played host to not one but two of the most boring music videos of all time? Or is that just saying something about how bland and hollow the song is? Valerie's video in particular is a great artistic statement, with nothing but two girls all dressed up for the party but left looking bored while an anemic song plays in the background.

Both videos speak volumes about the song and it really will be best for the band in the long run if we can just brush this single release under the carpet as quickly as possible and hope everyone forgets the Manics ever stooped so low.

Then you can brush the last 10 years under the carpet. Autumnsong is the best single since 1996. They stooped low with TIMT and Lifeblood, but I can't see what's wrong with SATT and especially its best song.

I can't see what's wrong with the TIMTTMY singles or Empty Souls.

Autumnsong is a fabulous single as well, just the kind of thing that helps the band to stay on the radios etc. Easily one of the best single choices from SATT.
