Quote:
The whole experience, as every Morrissey related event or gig I go to does, caused me to reflect on fandom - and, more specifically, ‘cult’ fandoms. Morrissey is far from the only cult hero in music, with David Bowie, Richey Edwards and others causing the same amount of fervor and adulation. What quality do these very different men possess that makes people adore them to such a degree? I think it's a shambolic world we live in when fully grown men can throw all their passion into something like a football team, cry with pride/sadness if they win/fail. Try doing that with a musician and you're called an obsessive. |

Takk, you silly sausage. Why would I believe he's on the moon? I don't have a problem with your beliefs, so why attack mine? What does it matter to you what I think?
Interviews are interviews. Nobody's going to say anything they don't think we have the right to hear (i.e. Richey's relationship (or not) with the enigmatic Jo), any family difficulties he'd been having, for example. Remember Richey spent a chunk of his teen years living with his grandparents because his relationship with his dad wasn't good. What were his relations with the rest of the band really like during the final few months? WE DON'T KNOW. You can only take interviews at face value, so nobody can come over all Scotland Yard about this "case" because all we read is INTERVIEWS. Seriously, what do you know about the "circumstances of his disappearance"? That he left a hotel, drove home, left some stuff, his car was found at a service station near the Severn Bridge. There are rumours that he said hi to one of Lori's friends and he was carrying a guitar case. There are rumours that he took a massive taxi ride and faked a Cockney accent. No great detail. |

It's a discussion board, if you don't want a reply to your posts, why post them in the first place .

I like replies, just not fuckwit comments that make me sound like I'm some kind of Ickean conspiracy wacko...and it's good when people don't over-react for this is never ever useful.

Okay maybe not great detail but that doesn't mean we can't rule things out and it doesn't mean we can't question other people's opinions on what happened. If people have been following a band for as long as some on the forum have, they'll have enough of a sense of the situation and generally how the country worked at the time to know some suggestions are just not plausible.

I've been a fan since 1991. Richey-era, a rampant fan. I know what the country was like at that time. I'm 44 years of age and god how I wish I wasn't.

You know what? I was at uni in 1990-93. No mobile phones. The height of technology in Halls of Res was a cardphone public phone. Things were so simple back then ahhh.

I wasn't trying to suggest that you didn't know any of that, I just think it's silly to tell people that we can't rule things out because we don't know the definite answer.
I don't know where Richey is but I think I can safely say that the band aren't lying to the courts. I also don't think they have him hidden away in their studio and it wasn't him doing the backing vocals on JFPL despite the fact someone on here once claimed otherwise. I don't need to have been in the band or be Richey himself to determine that.

The band haven't had any involvement with the courts, have they?
The Richey backing vocals wasn't one of my thoughts, so don't pin that one on me. Enough for tonight. I'm watching The Entity. Still a cracking film after all these years. |

They'd have gone to the court to declare him dead. If they were nothing to do with that then I don't believe just his family were lying to the courts.
Yeah anyway, I should sleep now.

This is so right. It always amazes me when you see parents talking about how crazy their teens are about a boyband or similar and then you see them shouting and crying in front of a tv watching football.
