'Lipstick Traces 2'. I didn't buy any 'PFAYM' singles, as I was damn skint. I liberated the b-sides from the net though. Least they could do. 'Distractions' was a tune. Thank Gawd this is the only band that I suffer from a completism disorder about!

You're forgetting the Cassette box set (or maybe you weren't)

To be fair, the description did say CD1 bsides very early on. I guess we all assumed that was mainly referring to the EMG singles and they'd have the sense to compile all the original songs.

Ah well, as long as the three 7"s look pretty it's ok. And I can put my lipstick on.

Hi

I wish to reflect the frustrations of fellow Manics fans and enquire as to why the forthcoming box set only contains CD1 b-sides. With this kind of thing, completism is key, and the fact that only a certain portion of the associated material will be present is very infuriating. It's a case of do it properly or not at all basically. Some of us have spent an absurd amount on the band over the last 20 years, and the idea of having all the non-album releases in one box would have been splendid, yet there seems to be a cut-off point around 2001, after which original tracks began to be housed on cassette singles, CD2s and vinyl. Some singles had up to 5 additional tracks spread across numerous formats, yet they will be only represented with one track if this proposal is to become real! If you're going to do this kind of thing, it's worth doing properly, and it's highly ironic that such an anti-MP3 purist like Nicky Wire would give his blessing to this shoddy laziness. Us dedicated, fervent Manics fans deserve better to be honest, therefore I imagine I don't speak for myself when I urge you to repackage this properly! It could have been the perfect Manics product, consolidating all our collections, and therefore becoming a much treasured product, but it seems undercooked and plagued with apathetic neglect!

PLEASE reconsider the tracklisting for this product, otherwise it's going to be like watching the director's cut of an earth-shatteringly iconic film* with a number of key scenes missing. For £165, you'd expect a job to be done properly, surely?

Regards

David

*Though part of me does echo Dancing Kirby's feelings re: some things post 2001, majority of 'PFAYM' b-sides were piss weak. I used to really enjoy single release days! Every era has to end eventually though.

Did you get a reply ?

I kind of want this but I still just don't think I can justify the purchase of it to myself. I already own 75/80% of those singles anyway and the only thing that could have made me take the financial plunge would have been if it contained ALL of the Manics penned B sides and covers (most of the remixes I can do without). The lack of it being a truly definitive singles collection is something of a killer for me.

If you're missing 25% of the singles, that's maybe 10 of the CDs ? And I'm guessing that they're the earlier CDs ? The boxset is £165 and if you're patient with e-bay you should be able to pick them up for under £16.50 each (on average). www.eil.com are expensive but can be used to "plug" gaps if you're prepared to pay.

Another option is to check out the Japan releases as they contain some b-sides. They released all the albums as 2-CD sets available at www.cdjapan.co.jp OK they'll set you back around £25, especially with the current exchange rate, but you get six of those for the £165 box set.

The older out of print Japan EP releases of the early singles again have b-sides on them (some only on vinyl in the UK but on CD in Japan).

There will be some people who will buy the box set with the idea of selling on their original CD1s on ebay. So the collectors market may be busy with plenty of CDs for sale at reasonable prices.

You might even get people buying the box set for £165 to sell it's contents separately on ebay. Again this might work for you if you don't mind paying a tenner for a CD in a slipcase.

Even at the price tag it might be worth a punt as an investment as I expect the box set to have a price tag of at least £300 once it's deleted with more for the Motown Junk containing edition (though having a value of £300 and selling it for £300 are two different things). The boxset re-release of the Generation Terrorist singles goes for silly values.

The market for Manics CDs on ebay is already dead and this won't change anything. Singles that you'd have seen for over £20 on market stalls fifteen years ago are worth less than the P+P these days.

It's all dependant on how limited it is. If the PFAYM box was as limited as the website tried to make it appear and wasn't still on general sale, then it might have been a good purchase for those looking to sell it on at some point. Same could be said of this, except they're not even pretending to call it a limited edition this time.

Cheers for the tips.

I actually have pretty much all of the early CD singles but slipped out of the habit of buying all of the physical single releases around the Lifeblood era.
