James' voice

The boy still has it. There is some absolutely stunning vocals on the new album.
Lets Go To War, Divine Youth, Misguided Missile, etc

Even I a streamlined keyboard warrior who averages about 40 posts a year would find it hard to deny that James still has it. He's always been a wonder.

Even a seasonal outpuring of posts around every new album would have to agree on Jimbo also having it, as he grows older. (Not so with many other vocalists, he must really take care of his throat-stuff.) He sounds beautiful on View From Stow Hill.

His voice hasn't been so hot live over the last couple of years but he always pulls it off in the studio.

Was that the reason he kicked the fags a few years back I wonder, or was that just general health?

His voice is still very good for a guy who smokes.

He's definitely lost the top end and it shows, more so when they perform live as they can always go for the better take on record. It's a shame but that's just the result of age/smoking.

Easily solved by taking the songs down an octave, but I don't know if that would go over well with some fans. I'd be okay with it personally.

An octave? That's a big drop!

He smoked?! Until, like, NOW?! The man is nearing fifty, what a silly thing to do for a singer with such a distinctly high, gliding voice. Myself a singer of sorts - 29, just quit cigarrettes - I gotta say it's a miracle he's stil got anything left in there, he must really have good technique.

As to him losing that high octave - no he hasn't, it's just more forced now, not as effortless. It shows when he goes there, but he can still pull off stuff like the ending of 3 Ways To See Despair. Don't expect "Born A Girl" or "I Live To Fall Asleep" any more, but the main thing - that gliding, compassionate, yet strangely mocking emotion that makes his voice special - that's still there. And that's as much a technical ability, as an emotional one.

A lot of singers have their top end become more strained as time goes by. Even Joakim Berg from kent.

James can still hit the occasional killer high note with power but as for entire songs are concerned, his average range has dropped a few notes. The last two albums are excellent examples of that, especially Futurology. For example, his vocals on Between The Clock And The Bed, Black Square, The View From Stow Hill and The Next Jet To Leave Moscow (apart from the falsetto bits, of course) are rather low. My voice goes quite high but I usually find singing most Manics songs hard and I have absolutely no problem singing those songs I just mentioned.

Well I agree that he sounds better on the record than live, age's a bitch. But he still has an amazing voice!
