What did Richey play on the records?
I've read (on here I believe) that Richey played only a small part in one of the songs on the GATS album, but according to Wikipedia:
The guitar intro to "No Surface All Feeling" was played by Edwards before his disappearance, making it the only instance of Edwards' own guitarwork being present on a Manic Street Preachers studio album in the band's history (Bradfield would typically perform all the guitar parts for their recordings). I never knew Richey played anything for this song. |

I think he definitely played on la tristesse durera
As far as No Surface All Feeling goes i thought he played on the demo but not the actual studio version? |

Considering the intro to No Surface All Feeling... is that really very likely?! Haha To be honest, I think there's something of his on NSAF (not the intro!), as you can hear the subtle change in the recording between verse and chorus if you listen closely. So I'm think the choruses were done first perhaps...

I've always been led to believe the bit they kept from the demo was the rhythm guitar for the end part - it's not quite as thick sounding as the rest, so I can imagine that being a tacked-on part. In all fairness though, even he could have played the rhythm guitar for that whole song. Just not the lead... Also, he supposedly played the chord in La Tristesse before the song kicks in for real. |

If he did do the intro to NSAF then it's no wonder he went missing. Him playing the guitar properly would have really tipped him over the edge.
Not that it's likely he did as most of you have already said.

I think they are mixing it up with the outro to NSAF. All that feedback and stuff, richey's guitar is amongst the noise..

Richey playing guitar only makes one appearence - in La Tristesse Durera. He did not play in any other recording whatsoever. It's all rumours.
With regard to No Surface, Sean tried to teach Richey part of the guitar but he wasn't interested.

I'm sure it was one of the 'biography' books that first mentioned Richey playing on No Surface - might have been the Martin Clarke I'm not sure - never heard it supported by anyone in the band but someone did write that he played something quite significant on the track. I always took it as the rhythm of the song as I thought that quite feasible, but perhaps its all bollocks.

I'm not sure about this - if you listen to bootlegs from '94, particularly the Astoria gigs, Richey is far more accomplished and audible so I imagine he was in fact more eager to learn new songs and I personally believe he did play on NSAF.

He did all of it, James was pissed, Nicky didn't understand why he didn't get a 1:1, Sean was playing Sega. It was all Richey all the time- and I heard that the poetry he left behind before fucking off to Bognoregis formed most of the lyrics on KYE as a practical joke to see if Nicky used them.
Apparently. That being said though in all seriousness he could play barre chords alright and on the last few gig bootlegs (one was up on the BBCs website wasn't it a few weeks back) you can clearly hear him plugged in and playing along particularly in You Love Us, so fair dues.

I'm sure I heard someone say that he was actually becoming a reasonable guitarist, to the extent that a couple of times at gigs he actually played the intro to Motorcycle Emptiness.....

eeerrrr don't know about that. but he did a good job of filling in during Motown Junk at the last Astoria gig when something happened to James' guitar.

People trying to convince themselves that Richey was a proper musician is definitely one of the funnier things in Manicsland.
