Back in the era of bad Manics opening acts..

I know from what I've read on here that there was an era when the Manics were kinda noted for bad support acts.

But who WERE some of them? List please!

(The train of thought: we can certainly add Bear Hands to that list. They are truly awful.)

I hated Cherry Ghost, they were truly boring. Wasn´t too keen on Razorlight or Ian Brown either.

In Chicago I liked BH enough; I thought they had many areas that they needed to improve, but musically, I liked what I heard. Bad singer though. But the next night, all positive thoughts went out the window when they 1.) had no backup guitar, and 2.) unleashed a love song to weed. Uh, we're how old? No thanks.

I thought 'The Answering Machine' were particularly terrible on the JFPL dates in the UK before the summer. Was not a fan of them at all.

Yeah, I didn´t like them either but at least they didn´t outdo Cherry Ghost in boringness. I almost fell asleep on the barrier when CG were playing.

On a related topic, I think the best band to open 4 'em was Hello Disaster in LA in '92

Agreed - that band needs to be culled before it's too late.

Even as I type this, I want to go and double check because it seems so unreal, but Mogwai were support in '98. What an amazing choice! Possibly the only 'cool' band they've ever chosen?

No, they had a pre-fame, still underground, Elbow in 2001. That was pretty awesome.

When they played Copenhagen forever ago they had Mew as opening act. Ok I guess.

My Vitriol were the best support they ever had, imho. 2001 at Brixton.

Edit - Mew? I stand corrected

Back then I wasn't too bothered about them - can't say I really am now either - otherwise Delays were probably the best support I've seen.

Ian Brown, Razorlight, Kids in Glass Houses, Cherry Ghost (one good song though), and The Afternoons were pretty boring or dire.

That support by Mew would have been great - them doing that was the first I ever heard of Mew, followed by a couple of months by buying a single of their's. Had they not supported I might not have heard of them until recently.

I thought Ian Brown was stunningly bad, although I may have exaggerated his badness over the years. The Delays were probably the best. I would've loved to see them with Mew or Super Furry Animals.

On a side note, can someone confirm for me that My Chemical Romance supported them at some point?
