Firefight Lyrics Question

Wake up the past and tell it to stay awake
OR
Wake up the past and tell it to stay away?

The former would make more sense, as it's asking the past to return as it betters the bad times which are here to say, but most lyric sites state the latter.
Is there a definate answer?

Much like his lyrics in Ocean Spray I think they're interchangable.

"Please stay away and we can drink some ocean spray
Please stay awake and we can drink some ocean spray"

Awake would make more sense within the line but Away would make more sense generally.

It's away to rhyme with stay.

Why would you wake up the past just to tell it stay away? That would be silly. You'd think that if the past was asleep it wouldn't be bothering you, and that if you were to wake it up to tell it to stay away, all that would accomplish would be to annoy it! There's the past, having a nice kip and you wake it up just to tell it you don't want it around. Pretty rude if you ask me!

I'm going with tell it to stay awake - 'cause he wants the past to stay awake and shield him from the bad times that are here to stay? imo, anyway.

I always thought it was 'away', but thinking about it 'awake' makes more sense. But, since when did sense have anything to do with it!?

I've always just sung "away" to myself. Even if this is wrong....I'll always sing AWAY.

Just thinking, you wouldn't tell the past to stay awake (or in your memory I suppose) if it was hard to look back upon. So thus the stay away.

Might be what he's getting at, I dunno!
