Manics nominated for Welsh Music Prize

Manic Street Preachers, The Joy Formidable and The Blackout are among the acts nominated for the inaugral Welsh Music Prize, which is being billed as Wales' equivalent to the Mercury Music Prize. The prize, which has been set up by BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens and music promoter John Rostron, will be awarded during SWN festival in October. Other nominated artists for the prize include Funeral For A Friend, Gruff Rhys and Y Niwl. The winner will be picked by a panel of 10, with neither Rostron or Stephens able to vote themselves. The full list of nominess for the Welsh Music Prize are as follows: Al Lewis – 'In The Wake' Colorama – 'Box' Funeral For A Friend – 'Welcome Home Armageddon' Gruff Rhys – 'Hotel Shampoo' Lleuwen – 'Tan' Manic Street Preachers – 'Postcards From A Young Man' Stagga – 'The Warm Air Room' Sweet Baboo – 'I’m a Dancer/Songs About Sleepin'' The Blackout – 'Hope' The Gentle Good – 'Tethered for the Storm' The Joy Formidable – 'The Big Roar' Y Niwl – 'Y Niwl'

Can't be like the Mercury Music Prize.... As I've actually liked quite a few of those albums on the Welsh list.

if it's wales's equivalent of the mercury music prize then it should probably go to a new act. The manics don't need it.. they've opened libraries so its a given that they're welsh royalty

Pleased to read about this! Good to have a list worth looking at for a change. Obviously I would Postcards to get the vote but if not then definitely The Big Roar!

Yeah, but they don't sing about wales, they don't have welsh themes, they don't sing in welsh..was more my point. Pick up an album and you wouldn't know it was from a welsh band.

It's from a Welsh perspective. The Big Roar doesn't have anything particularly 'Welsh' about it in terms of themes etc either!
