it's been a bit odd that we have had no live DVD since the whole Cuba thing. perhaps they don't feel like they are that good looking visually anymore?
the Journal For Plague Lovers tour would have been the idea set to record and release, but that never happened. i would guess that they shall have the 02 gig filmed as a "just in case" measure - if the National Treasures set sells and keeps on selling, the label will be all too keen to cash in & if it means the band get a steady stream of income whilst on a break that's no bad thing. a major stumbling block, however, could be who these "special guests" are. unless they sign an advance agreement or even waiver for use of footage from the gig, that's a minefield of royalties and permissions. we may just have to hope someone takes the time, trouble and imagination to take the requisite equipment in with them.....

Odd that the Manics haven't had an official live album, either (unless I'm wrong?).

they kind of have a point - more often than not a live album is a nice contractual obligation filler, but there are some examples where it can be as essential an album for a band or artist as what they've done in the studio (The Who Live At Leeds, Frampton Comes Alive and Talking Heads Stop Making Sense off the top of my head).

I'm sure I once read James saying he doesn't think live albums offer good value for money. Besides there are so many bootlegs how would you make a selection? That said we did eventually get a Clash live album but that was some 15years after they split.

It would be churlish not to record the output of the cameras for the big screens. Assuming they are used.

If they don't, they're idiots.
This is their biggest and most significant show since the Millenium gig, and the only time they'll play a show like this.

This all day long.... would be idiotic not to do it, so many people would buy/illegally download it!

There are reasons for them to not bother with it.
It's a Christmas gig that will have the same songs as a compilation album they're releasing this month. Do we really need to go through a 'National Treasures: This Time It's Live And With Santa Hats!' campaign again in 12 months when they're supposed to be moving on? The last hour will be awful in terms of their performance and JDB's ability to make any kind of noise with his mouth - and that's presuming the previous two hours aren't wrecked by him having his annual bad cold. I don't know if it's the same for every act, but the last time they performed in that place, the sound on the pro-shot footage was bloody ghastly. Fan-shot videos on YouTube are where the views are at these days. What's good enough for Led Zeppelin is good enough for the Manics. |

can you point us in the direction of the other December gigs they've played where they opted to wear Santa hats for doing Of Walking Abortion? or where they said they would be doing this at the 02? excellent if all the fans turn up as Santa or Elves and the band do not!!
