cancelled gigs
Hello,
I was browsing through the excellent msppedia and noticed that MSP cancelled quite some gigs during their history as a live band. Can anyone elaborate on that? I found it quite strange that a band would cancel such an amount of gigs. Discuss! |

Could be for a whole number of reasons. I'm not really up to date on the cancelled shows further back the years; but for example, several dates on the PFAYM 2010 tour were cancelled due to James having laryngitis and put back to early 2011. Also Nicky has a notable history of injury/illness, so that may have been a past reason for the number of gigs called off.

I'm pretty sure the gig the day after the Norwich 4Real incident in 1991 was cancelled due to Richey having stitches in his arm.

Most gigs over the last decade were cancelled due to James' having cold/flu, think one or two from nicky's back. American gigs were cancelled due to Richey's disappearance, and I'm guessing the Euro 2001 tour was something to do with 9/11?
Not sure why it's that strange, though. Last edited by Takk; 06-05-2012 at 14:04. |

Compared to most bands (*cough* Kasabian *cough*) the Manics are pretty respectful where cancelling gigs is concerned. When they do it, it is for genuine reasons and usually as a last resort.

They cancelled their appearance at Werchter Festival in 1999 at the eleventh hour. I think this cancellation may have been around the time of the death of James' mother.

They cancelled their gig in Essen, Zeche Carl, Germany (16.09.1992) to fly back home to perform "Theme from M*A*S*H" at Top Of The Pops.
James still tells the German audience (this year it was in Cologne) that they have a special connection to Germany because they were there when they found out about their first UK-Top 10 hit. They cancelled their gig in Halle (a.d. Saale), Easy Schorre, former East-Germany (09.09.1993) because they hadn't sold enough tickets. They cancelled their gig in London, Brixton Academy, UK (10.12.1993) beause of their manager's (Philipp Hall) death. Most of the gigs they'd had to cancel because of James' throat-problems they re-scheduled to a later time. |

This is true. It was at the Birmingham Barrel Organ. Richey had to leave the stage the following night due to excessive weeping from the wounds. (Makes me cringe just thinking about it!)

They weren't to know it was going to chart so well so I'd let them off for that one!

If it got to number 1 then I would forgive them. They didn't have to play TOTP!
