Songs of great promise (go absolutely nowhere)

Just listened to "Its All Gone" from CD1 of TBTGOG. This is one of the most boring songs the Manics have ever done IMHO. Musically different with an expectation for it to be a belter and than James begins singing.....workmanlike, bored, tiring delivery. The song has possibly THE shittiest chorus also and goes absolutely nowhere.

What other songs spring to mind?

It's All Gone really is very near the bottom of the barrel...

...but I scraped a little further and unearthed All Alone Here, surely the most anticlimactic, bored, lifeless song in their oeuvre.

Two excellent songs right there. Amongst my favourites. Always get the two titles bloody mixed up though.

I was working at some place where I had to be in by 6:30 in the morning every day right around the time All Alone Here came out on the Empty Souls single. I used to listen to it as I'd drive down a very dark and very empty Beltway each morning. It was a perfect soundtrack for those drives, and for that reason will always have a spot in my heart. The chorus ("and the Bethlehem radio is crystal clear and beautiful...") is sparkling and lovely.

The lyrics of S.Y.M.M. get me. Promising subject matter, but the execution--really, Nick?

Everything Will Be. It was better in live form, but was lifeless as the studio version.

The chorus of Epicentre always falls flat for me, disappointing as I love the rest of the song. I guess that counts.

Well, I'd mention Golden Platitudes. Not that I hate it, it's just... The Manics can do better.

The beginning of the song is musically just gorgeous and the introductive lyrics "The platitudes they all dissolved
They got too deep, got too involved
The platitudes just interludes
To break the trust with me and you"

quite intriguing. I mean, this beginning sucks you deep into the song, with expectations.

And then, as it comes to the refrain, sounds as nothing but a whining, a complaining of a nostalgic old man.
And, well, considerig the band's biography and Nicky's age, I understand it and I don't accuse it, in fact, sounds pretty honest, it's just.... It could have been better.

'Intense Humming Of Evil' has never ever done anything for me. I can hear what they were aiming for, but it just doesn't work.

Yes I know where you are coming from. I cant put my finger on precisely what is lacking but there definitely is something lacking in that song.
