Morissey and Marr gave me choice?
Could anyone please explain that line from the song 1985?
Its just because i am not that the smiths expert. Why did they sing that? Is it because the smiths influenced a lot of bands like suede and so on, i read on wiki. could the line be understood in that way: The Smiths influenced our music and gave us a choice for our music? |

The lyrics are nostalgic about 1985, with references to Torvil and Dean and the miner's strike. The young Manics would probably have been listening to The Smiths at that time, as they were still around in 1985.

I saw it simply as something they could choose to listen to which was a bit different for its time.

Maybe Nicky thinks that Meat really Is Murder? Apart from when he's complaining about other countries not doing steaks right...

Isn't it that hearing the smiths pushed them to start a band themselves?

Nicky said everything changed for him once he heard The Smiths

Gave him choice between the perfect lyrics (of Morrissey) and interesting/original guitars (of Marr). I suppose it was a change from the other bands they would have listened to at the time were most of the focus was on one band member. Before The Smiths who would have chosen to be a Lyricist without writing the music?

Moz and the Wire are very similar in my opinion - in some of his lyrics I can see a bit of Morrissey. So maybe the Smiths were what made Nicholas Jones 'Nicky Wire'. I think he means personality wise and his outlook on the world.
Morrissey and Marr gave me choice, personally, in the sense that I can choose not to put on a sad rose tinted front and that I can be myself - basically selfish, intellectual, antisocial and most importantly a pretentious twat. Because the world is an ugly place and people suck. Edit: Jesus I do sound like Morrissey. Help.

Quote:
Basically, hearing the Moz / Marr and getting into music showed them that there was another way, and that we don't all have to follow the path our class has laid out for us. Or something.

I think it means they either could grow gracefully like Marr and disgracefully as Morrissey.

Maybe it's that Morrissey and Marr first presented the idea, the choice to pursue music and to become a voice to be heard, instead of whatever other life options might have been open to them at that time. Like, the choice of what to make from your life. Being like The Smiths became an actual possibility. In 1985. In 1985.

Jesus fucking Christ, imagine being a fly on the wall for a conversation between Nicky Wire and Morrissey? You'd feel like topping yourself.
